The air temperature in the Upper Clutha early yesterday afternoon was a shade below 5degC and with a cold westerly blowing the MetService advised it would feel like 1degC.

There was ice alongside the Hawea River at the kayak park but Banks Peninsula kayaker Blair Lion (left), in Wanaka for the Mountain Film Festival, said the temperature in the rapids was ''not as cold as you might think''.

His companion, Sophie Mulder (right), a white water kayak instructor from Murchison, did admit to being a bit cold, but said she was enjoying a day off from skiing.
