Fighting keeps police busy

Queenstown police were kept busy over the weekend dealing with several punch-ups - one of which resulted in a female being knocked out.

An incident on Saturday evening started when a 35-year-old man approached a 21-year-old man outside Chico's bar at 11.40pm.

Sergeant Steve Watt said the younger man's girlfriend stepped between the pair and was punched and knocked out.

''She was on the ground for some time.''

The 35-year-old faces two assault charges.

Two men, aged 34 and 25, also face assault charges following a fight at a party at a house in Woodstock Rd on Saturday.

The violence continued on Sunday when a 19-year-old Invercargill man was arrested at 3am after allegedly verbally abusing police and fighting with a doorman, and a 24-year-old tourist was arrested after allegedly punching a doorman who took a glass from him.

Police said the man threw a bottle at the doorman, hitting him on the side of the head.

The alleged offender, who is staying at a backpackers in town, was restrained until police arrived, and was charged with assault with a weapon.

All the arrested men have been remanded to appear in the Queenstown District Court at a later date.
