Beautiful but slippery

State Highway 6 between Makarora and Haast was one of many roads affected by snow and ice in the South yesterday.

Fulton Hogan supervisor Bart Nicol, of Wanaka, photographed the highway as he approached the summit from Haast late yesterday morning.

The road was closed until noon while it was snowploughed and gritted.

''A little thin layer of snow got packed down to ice,'' Mr Nicol said.

''It was very slippery and icy.''

The NZ Transport Agency is warning drivers to be ''extra vigilant'' throughout the South over the next two days, with showers forecast in many places and snow to 200m possible.
