Chef in finals

A Queenstown chef will vie for the title of Apprentice Chef of the Year in Auckland this weekend.

The Hilton's Nico Parry (20) is one of four young chefs competing at the New Zealand Chefs National Salon at the Logan Campbell Centre.

The winner will travel to next year's Melbourne Food and Wine Festival.

The four entrants, who are training through the Apprenticeship in Cookery programme, will be judged on their technical and organisational skills as they create a first-class menu.

Dean Minchington, chief executive of contest sponsor Service IQ, said the finalists were ''New Zealand's next generation of culinary stars''.
