Wakatipu High School head girl Victoria Boult (17, left) won an excellence in acting award for her role as ''Josh'' in Bang Bang You're Dead at Theatre New Zealand's TheatreFest one-act play southern regional finals in Queenstown on Saturday night.

The high school won the southern regional finals with its controversial performance, based on events surrounding a pupil who shot his parents and 27 classmates in Springfield, Oregon, in the United States in 1998.

Wakatipu pupils beat a group of youth performers from the Invercargill Repertory Society, but the 16 Wakatipu pupils will not know until Sundaynight, after the last two regional finals, whether they have done enough to head to the national finals in Hamilton next month.

Vanessa Woodward and Jack Swale also won excellence in acting awards on Saturday night.

The only competition rules are that plays have to be between 15 and 50 minutes long and feature at least two actors.

Victoria recently returned from three weeks in the United Kingdom as a member of this year's New Zealand Young Shakespeare Company.
