A meeting to discuss recent conflicts between outdoor enthusiasts and skifield operator NZSki will be held in Queenstown tonight.

Tensions over access to recreation reserve land leased by NZSki from the Department of Conservation (Doc) came to a head on June 25 when three ski tourers were trespassed from Coronet Peak skifield.

It follows a dispute between the company and outdoor recreation clubs over road access to The Remarkables range earlier in the year.

Organiser Erik Bradshaw hopes the meeting will take a long term perspective rather than focus on recent ''physical confrontations''.

He had obtained copies of NZSki's lease agreements and correspondence with Doc through the Official Information Act, and obtained legal advice to better understand the rights and responsibilities of the company and the public around the management of the reserves.

He wanted recreational use to be better recognised in the company's new lease for Coronet Peak, and the management of The Remarkables access road needed to be clarified, Mr Bradshaw said.

''NZSki have put in a good effort to engage with the community, but I think they've done it very much through their perspective.''

''There's a legal framework that these things work under, but at the end of the day, legal frameworks have to reflect the common reality of the people who use the land, and that needs to reflect both NZSki and the recreational users.''

The meeting was supported by the Federated Mountain Clubs, the New Zealand Alpine Club and the Queenstown Climbing Club. NZSki and Doc had been invited to send representatives.

''The number of people who turn up will be a good test of how important this issue is.''

Coronet Peak ski area manager Ross Copland said issues with ski tourers failing to follow safety guidelines had ''improved massively'' since three ski tourers were trespassed in June.

''People have realised they will potentially lose access if they blatantly disregard those safety guidelines.''

The meeting tonight is at 7.30pm at the Wakatipu Senior Citizens Association rooms at Malaghan House, Memorial St.
