Some of New Zealand's top skateboarders demonstrated their skills and tricks at the opening of the new bowl at the Wanaka Skatepark on Saturday.

The cloverleaf shaped bowl - ranging in depth from 1.8m to 3.2m, with a smooth concrete surface - is the main feature of stage two of the skatepark, which is on Pembroke Park near the town centre and lake.

Costing $350,000, stage two of the skatepark has been constructed throughout the year.

Stage two also involves extensions to stage one of the skatepark, which was built in 2002, including extending one of the bowls and the eastern, or town centre, end of the facility.

Wanaka Skatepark Trust trustee Eddie Spearing said this work should be completed this week.

A pergola will also be built to provide shade for spectators.

The main funders of stage two of the skatepark are the Queenstown Lakes District Council, the Central Lakes Trust and the Otago Community Trust. Wanaka Skate Club members also raised funds.
