Tree disappears

An oak tree commemorating the 1937 coronation of King George VI has disappeared from the grounds of the old Wanaka Primary School.

A Wanaka resident told the Otago Daily Times this week he noticed the tree was still standing near Tenby St earlier this year but then, 10 days ago, he noticed it was gone.

The tree had a plaque explaining why it was planted.

Lane Hocking, who is developing the site for housing, said yesterday some trees had been removed during development but he was unaware of the oak and had not come across any plaque.

Mr Hocking said as far as he was aware, the due diligence process had shown no protection orders on the site but he would double-check.
