A few dead wallabies

Wallabies continue to hop into the Hawea area in small numbers, the Department of Conservation (Doc) says.

Doc recently advised the Otago Regional Council there had been ''a small number of confirmed wallaby kills'' in the area dating back to 2008.

The most recent kill was last year. ORC chairman Stephen Woodhead said action had to be taken soon to stop wallabies becoming established in the area, as coping with a large infestation would mean high costs.

The ORC report said the Hawea area would be surveyed, at strategic locations, to determine if these historic kills were ''isolated lone animals or part of a small population''.
