Three inquests this week

Inquests will be held in Queenstown this week to determine the cause of death of five people - four of them foreign nationals - killed in three separate incidents near Wanaka.

Tomorrow, Coroner David Crerar will hold two separate inquests for trampers whose bodies were found in Makarora earlier this year.

Scott James Oliver (41), of Wellington, was last seen on January 4 when he left a family tramping party on a track in the upper reaches of the Wilkin River in Mt Aspiring National Park, west of Makarora.

His body was found on January 23 on the open riverbed, about 15km downstream from where he was last seen alive.

Allison Lynn Willen (20), also known as Ally, was found dead in the Young Valley in Makarora on May 2, having become separated from her tramping party on the Gillespie Pass, between Young and Wilkin Valleys, on April 25.

Ms Willen, from Akron, Ohio, had been studying at the University of Otago on an International Studies Abroad programme.

On Thursday, Mr Crerar will preside over the joint inquest for Wing Fai Chan (60), also known as Allan, Kwai Tei Chong (61), also known as Connie, and Yin Wan Ng (56), all of Hong Kong, who died on November 6 last year near Luggate.

The trio were part of a party of nine travelling New Zealand in two separate vehicles when their rental van collided with a truck and trailer unit on State Highway 6.

The inquests will be held in the Queenstown District Court.
