Staff numbers unchanged

The number of Department of Conservation (Doc) staff working in Queenstown is unchanged after the department's latest restructuring round, which took effect last week.

Doc Queenstown partnerships ranger Chris Hankin told the Otago Daily Times that a staffing and territorial reorganisation, effective from September 21, had led to new roles and dissolution of others.

There had been ''no redundancies and no changes in numbers overall''.

The territorial rejig has resulted in the formation of a new operational region called Southern South Island, led by Alan Munn, that covers Southland, Fiordland and Central Otago.

The region is divided into Rakiura, Murihiku, Te Anau, Wakatipu and Central Otago, each led by an operations manager.

Mr Hankin said the operations manager role for Wakatipu would be advertised from next week.

Former Wakatipu conservation services manager John Roberts had taken up the role of statutory manager for Central Otago, but remained based in the resort.

The changes stem from a review of a restructuring of Doc in 2013.

An independent survey of staff last year found the majority believed the department was less efficient than before the restructure and its internal communication system was not working.

The 2013 changes resulted in the loss of 96 positions nationally, but Doc director-general Lou Sanson said in a report to a New Zealand Conservation Authority meeting last year that adjustments arising from the review would not involve staff cuts, redundancies or the closing of offices.
