'Speed' binge with youth

A 52-year-old Nelson man has been convicted of supplying amphetamine to a young German tourist while staying in a Queenstown hotel room with her.

Furniture remover Timothy Owen Mahon and tourist Lina Zuchantke (19) spent three days staying at the Hilton Hotel, snorting lines of ''speed'' off the top of the mini-bar.

Police were called after Miss Zuchantke called for an ambulance, saying she needed medical assistance related to drug use.

Mahon, in the Queenstown District Court yesterday, admitted supplying the class B controlled drug and was remanded on bail for sentence on November 9.

Prosecuting Sergeant Ian Collin said the pair had met in the Tasman area earlier in 2015 and agreed to get together in Queenstown.

After three days, seldom leaving the room, Miss Zuchantke called for an ambulance and said the man she was with might also need assistance.

She was taken to hospital by ambulance and Mahon followed in a taxi.

Sgt Collin said: ''They were spoken to by police at the hospital.

''The defendant admitted supplying the drug and said he had bought a quarter of a gram, one bag, from a friend.''
