Airport arrival numbers up

Australian and Chinese visitors were two of the driving factors behind increased passenger numbers at Queenstown Airport during September.

The airport's monthly passenger update shows total passengers rose 11.2% on September 2014 to 119,902, which was attributed to spring skiing, Australian and New Zealand school holidays and the Chinese Moon Festival holiday period.

Total international passengers grew 14.4% to 37,555, with numbers on all transtasman routes holding steady.

Meanwhile, increased capacity on all domestic routes, combined with increased passenger volumes, led to a 9.9% rise in domestic passengers to 82,347.

Total passengers for the 12 months ended September 2015 were up 12.7% to 1,439,750.

The airport also released its winter passenger numbers, which showed increases across the board.

Between June and September 323,875 domestic passengers moved through the airport, an increase of 9% on last winter.

During the same period international passengers increased by 15% to 190,522.

The biggest increase in international arrivals was during June, when numbers increased from 12,381 to 16,875 (36%), while the largest increase in domestic arrivals was in August, lifting 14% from 40,339 to 45,988.
