Queenstown may become the new home for the Otago Southland Karate Championships, after a successful first event on Sunday.

Karate Otago Southland chairman Pat Quaid, of Queenstown, said the annual event had been held in Cromwell, but growth in the number of competitors meant a new venue was required.

At the Queenstown Events Centre on Sunday four mats were in use throughout the day as martial arts exponents aged from 7 to over 40 were put through their paces.

Mr Quaid said competitors came from throughout Otago and Southland, as well as Christchurch, Ashburton and Timaru for the one-day event.

''Although it's our provincial tournament, we've got a lot from outside Otago as well.

''We've got absolute beginners and we've got four New Zealand representatives.''

Fighters who performed well on Sunday would head to either the nationals, or New Zealand Open, both being held next year.

Mr Quaid hailed yesterday's event a success and said plans were already under way for the 2016 championships, to be held in the resort over Labour Weekend.
