Most oppose paid parking

Wanaka residents have rejected a proposal to install pay and display parking machines in the town's centre.

The Queenstown Lakes District Council has called for submissions on its proposed changes to parking in Wanaka over the past month.

The council is considering introducing paid parking in a zone bordered by Ardmore, Brownston and Dungarvon streets.

An Otago Daily Times count of the 167 submissions returned to the council showed 70% were against the use of parking meters in Wanaka and 6.5% were in favour of them.

Submitter Oliver Roulston said Wanaka was already expensive.

''Wanaka doesn't need paid parking; keep the town natural and don't waste the money.''

Ruth Lyons said the pay and display machines would affect both locals and tourists.

''Parking meters in Wanaka are unnecessary and contrary to the spirit and amenities of a small tourist town.''

Jodie Rainsford said many people who used the 30-minute car parks only needing them for a short time.

''To have to go and put money in the meter will take an extra five minutes anyway,'' she said.

Nicholas Steenson he did not support the parking machine proposal, but if they were to be used some vehicles should be exempt.

'' I'd like to see an exemption for motorcyles and scooters, to encourage less congestion.''

Brett Nicol supported the meters, saying they would be financially beneficial.

''Good to see parking controlled and gain a revenue at the same time,'' he said.

About half of those in support of the meters thought parking charges should apply to tourists, not locals.

A hearing date for the submissions is yet to be set by the community board.
