Emergency services allegedly 'assaulted' after crash

A Fire Service volunteer was pushed and punched in the ribs while attending the scene of a crash on Kawarau Gorge near Roaring Meg, Queenstown last night, police say.

Three people face charges after the accident on State Highway 6 including the driver, a 24-year-old woman living in Cromwell.

She faces a dangerous driving causing injury charge, one for disorderly behaviour and received an infringement notice after being processed for alcohol, when she failed to negotiate an easy right hand bend and collided with a roadside barrier.

Senior Sergeant Paula Enoka, of Queenstown police, said they are very lucky no-one was seriously injured.

A 54-year-old man from Alexandra will be charged with assault on emergency services staff and a 29-year-old man also faces charges of disorderly behaviour.

Two of the six occupants were injured in the single car crash.

"A 51-year-old man had lacerations to his head and was taken to Dunedin hospital to conduct further checks. We touched base this morning and he is in a stable condition and not life threatening," Snr Sgt Enoka said.

A second man was assessed at the scene, but didn't have any major injuries.

Police investigations into the cause of the crash are continuning.
