New Zealand duck-calling champion Hunter Morrow (17) is ''like a pig in muck'' this week, according to his mother Tracey.

The Wanaka teenager picked up fifth place in the world duck-calling championships, in the United States, and was also fourth in the live goose-calling.

Now, Mrs Morrow says her son is getting the ''rock star'' treatment from his American hosts.

''They were all quite taken with the fact that this young kid would come from the other side of the world to compete.''

Mr Morrow is now in Illinois with duck and goose call makers, waiting for the opening of the waterfowl season.

Mr Morrow told the Otago Daily Times placing so well was ''a dream come true''.

''It was really, really awesome.''

He put his success down to a routine that was ''just what the judges wanted to hear''.

''It got me placed into the top five of both [categories].

''It just ended up all going to plan, really.''

Mrs Morrow said her son went on his first duck hunting trip at the age of 4, but it was only about six years ago he began duck-calling, under instruction from his father, Brett.
