Wanaka facility opponents call for support

A second group has signalled its intention of fighting plans for a water sports facility on the Lake Wanaka foreshore.

The Stoney Creek Action Group has begun advertising for support and has employed Wanaka environmental lawyer Jan Caunter to represent it.

On Thursday, the Queenstown Lakes District Council notified an application by the Wanaka Water sports Facility Trust to build a facility for rowers, swimmers and kayakers on the Roys Bay recreation reserve, east of Stoney Creek.

Representing the group, Lyall Shearer said it had previously been successful in stopping the building going ahead in front of his house. Now, he was returning the favour by helping residents affected by the new site.

The group believed the building would have an adverse effect on many local residents but would also dominate a family picnic area popular during the summer.

''Everybody in our group doesn't believe there should be any buildings on the foreshore, and especially in that area.

''That's probably the most pristine area of the lake.''

Public submissions close on December 10.
