Need for speed in trolley derby

Arrowtown's annual trolley derby has an ''exciting'' course change.

This Saturday, trolley drivers will finish the race by going off the side of the track into Butlers Green.

Organiser Anton Schmitz said there was the potential for some of the carts to get airborne ''so that could be pretty exciting and a little bit sketchy''.

The change was made because the trolleys were not finishing with enough speed after manoeuvring through the final hairpin bend added last year.

''I'm slightly worried about it; the first couple of runs I'm asking them to take it easy''.

He suspects some keen entrants have been practising on the course at night.

Council workers would carry out a pre-race inspection this week in case grass seeding was required after the race.

The objective of the Arrowtown Preschool fundraiser was to get as much crowd participation as possible, he said.
