The family of Mitchell Gameren, the pilot of the helicopter that crashed at Fox Glacier, said they are "feeling a huge sense of loss" as they extended their sympathies to those affected by last weekend's accident.

"To the families and friends worldwide affected by this terrible tragedy, we share in your pain and extend our deepest sympathies. Like you, we are all feeling a huge sense of loss," the Gameren family said.

"We offer our thanks to the Police, rescue teams, the Franz Joseph Glacier Community, we appreciate all the support we have received."

Gameren, along with four Britons and two Australians, were killed after an Alpine Adventures helicopter crashed into a heavily crevassed area on the West Coast glacier.

Three bodies were recovered the day after, although poor weather conditions saw that the last of the bodies could not be recovered until Thursday.

The key components of the Squirrel helicopter have been sent to Wellington for analysis.
