The organisers of two music festivals in Wanaka on New Year's Eve say they welcome the choices available to revellers.

On that night, party-goers can choose between two festivals and three other live music events in Wanaka, Cardrona, Hawea and Queensberry.

Rock band Shihad will ''co-headline'' Cardrona Valley's Rhythm and Alps festival with DJ Carl Cox, and Morgan Evans and Annah Mac will be among those to play at the Branding Music Festival.

This week, Rhythm and Alps festival organiser Alex Turnbull said he thought it was ''fantastic'' there were so many events on.

Despite the competition, tickets were selling well, he said.

''I mean, we do 70% of sales in the last month, so it is a little bit early to call the final whistle but we're pretty stoked with where we are sitting in the market right now,'' he said.

Mr Turnbull expected between 10,000 and 14,000 people to attend the two-day festival.

Branding Music Festival organiser Sarah Perriam said this year would be the first time the country music festival would be held at ''Lyonfield'', Queensberry.

Ms Perriam said the festival had ''outgrown'' its former home at Hawea Hotel.

''Our mentors have told us, if you own the land you would be silly not to establish a home for the festival there.

''Plus taking it from a licensed premises like a bar gives it more of a festival feel as opposed to a gig and that's what we wanted to do to take it to the next level.''

She said this year was proving to be particularly competitive for event organisers.

''I definitely acknowledge it is a competitive New Year's Eve like we have never seen before, but at the same time we are here for the long haul.''

She said many of the tickets for the festival had been sold to people in the North Island and Australia.

''The moral of our story is that 80% of people for the last two years have come from outside the area for the festival.''

She said tickets would be capped at 2500 to ensure festival-goers had the best experience possible.

United Productions co-owner Matt Gunn said Hawea Hotel would focus on providing a family-friendly atmosphere in the early evening of New Year's Eve, before bands played later in the night.

''We are looking to bring the locals back to having New Year's at Hawea Hotel.

''It is such an iconic venue,'' Mr Gunn said.
