'Appalling' behaviour by tourist

The behaviour of a young American tourist on Queenstown's waterfront yesterday prompted four complaints to the police from members of the public.

Sergeant Keith Newell said the 20-year-old man had been in the resort for only five hours when he allegedly began abusing members of the public near Earnslaw Park.

The intoxicated man threw water over a sunbather, made sexually inappropriate remarks to a woman, asked a member of the public where he could buy cannabis and threw an empty wine bottle that smashed on the ground.

"Members of the public were appalled," Sgt Newell said.

He will appear in the Queenstown District Court tomorrow charged with disorderly behaviour likely to cause violence.
