Tribute paid before funeral

Queenstown man Michael Anthony Ray, known as Tony, who died on the Routeburn Track, has been described as a true gentleman.

Paying tribute to his friend and colleague before the funeral today, Mactodd partner Richard Cunliffe, of Queenstown, said Mr Ray would be missed.

‘‘We remember Tony fondly as one of the profession's true gentlemen. A man always willing to bestow praise where it was due, even to the opposition in defeat. He was a mentor to many, a loyal and trusted friend and colleague, dedicated husband and father.''

Mr Cunliffe said Mr Ray (65) formerly of Kerikeri, was a highly regarded Resource Management Act practitioner and a trusted and respected employee.

Mr Ray spent much of his professional career acting for local authorities, including the Far North District Council, and latterly, following his move to the South Island in 2008, the Queenstown Lakes District Council.

Mr Ray died of natural causes while walking between Routeburn Flats Hut and Routeburn Falls Hut last Thursday.

His body was flown from the area with two companions in his tramping party.

His funeral service will be held at the Lakes Hayes Pavilion today at 4pm, followed by a private cremation.

He is survived by his wife, Leanne, and daughters Sophie and Olivia.
