Two people airlifted off mountains

Two people injured in falls near Wanaka yesterday were rescued by helicopters.

The Otago Rescue Helicopter recovered a female paraglider from Treble Cone.

St John was alerted at 12.29pm and dispatched the helicopter from Dunedin.

Communications adviser Ian Henderson said the woman was flown to Dunedin Hospital in a serious condition.

Wanaka police sub-area commander Senior Sergeant Allan Grindell said Wanaka's alpine cliff rescue team was alerted but did not need to be deployed.

He understood the woman had managed to find her own way to an area where she could be lifted out by helicopter.

At 11.50am, St John sent a rescue helicopter from Queenstown to Mt Roy to pick a man in his 60s who injured his knee in a fall.

He was flown to the Wanaka Medical Centre with moderate injuries.
