Central Otago food and wine is the focus of a new celebration in Wanaka.

The Feast Wanaka food and wine pop-up celebration began on Sunday and ends today.

Feast Wanaka director Nicola McConnell said while Wanaka was recognised for beautiful scenery, the celebration aimed to showcase the productive farming and horticultural side to the region.

"We want to focus on the bounty of produce grown and drinks produced in Wanaka and the wider Central Otago region.''

She said the first Feast Wanaka started small with a pop-up restaurant and cellar door.

Chef Nick Honeyman originally of Auckland, had spent the past few months working with Wanaka farmers and producers to bring his Le Petit Leon restaurant to Wanaka.

Ms McConnell said the pop-up restaurant married "French bistro'' cookery with a "bounty'' of ingredients from Wanaka.

"The majority of vegetables, herbs and berries came from the Wanaka Berry Farm and the venison used is farmed in west Wanaka.''

Mr Honeyman said he had enjoyed working with the local produce, particularly the Pembroke Patisserie bread which was "some of the best bread'' he had ever had.

"It has been really good being in Wanaka and I feel like Feast Wanaka is something that could grow quite quickly in popularity,'' he said.

Wanaka Berry Farm co-owner Simon Jackson said he thought the pop-up restaurant was a "great idea''.

"It is really creative and brings something new into town,'' he said.

A pop-up wine tasting event will be held today at Edgewater.
