Master Builders local branch formed

Central Otago builders have established their own branch of the Registered Master Builders Association.

The formation of the branch was sparked by the building boom in the Queenstown Lakes and Central Otago districts, new president Allister Saville, of Queenstown, said.

"Because of the growth in the construction industry, we were getting more and more members in this area so it made sense to start our own branch, covering the Queenstown Lakes and Central Otago districts,'' he said.

Formerly, the master builders in the area were part of the Otago branch, but the establishment of the new branch would give Central Otago builders "more of a voice''.

"The idea is that we'll be able to rotate meetings around the four main towns, Queenstown, Wanaka, Cromwell and Alexandra, so it's easier for our members to attend and we'll run our own first aid training courses, health and safety, small business courses and that kind of thing, all based in our patch.''

The area had its own challenges - from a transient workforce through to specialised labour needs, and there was a distinct local style of construction, using natural products such as schist stone and cedar, Mr Saville said.

It would be easier to compare notes and address challenges.

The new branch has more than 60 members and its first meeting is on Tuesday in Cromwell.
