The road to Jackson Bay is likely to remain closed to the general public for another two to three weeks.

Slips brought down by heavy rain about 10 days ago blocked the road and cut power to the small settlement.

Power has been restored but Westland District Council group manager district assets Vivek Goel told the Otago Daily Times yesterday only local residents would be allowed through the slip while contractors worked to clear it.

Mr Goel said about 10 slips had come down.

The cost of clearing them would be met by emergency funding from the New Zealand Transport Agency.

The closure of the road has been a disaster for the owner of Jackson Bay's Craypot cafe, Meg Ede.

She said yesterday she had used a helicopter to get to her beach side cafe, only to find all the food in her freezers had spoiled because of the lack of power.

"I had to throw every single thing out.

"The slip took a couple of poles out and of course they couldn't get them back in for a wee while.''

Ms Ede, who was insured, said January and February were the months when the cafe was "flat out'' and it was fully stocked.

"I was loaded for the Chinese New Year - lots of fish and crayfish.

"I had to throw my crayfish out.''

After Easter, tourist traffic to Jackson Bay usually dropped away, and she closed the cafe for the winter.

Ms Ede, who lives at Hannahs Clearing, said there was little she and her two staff could do except wait for the road to open.

"I don't know what I'm going to do.

"It's shocking.''

Ms Ede said her business was for sale, and had been for some time.

The cruise ship Silver Discoverer is due to call at Jackson Bay today to allow passengers to take a jet-boat trip on the Waiatoto River.

The Auckland agent for the ship said yesterday whether that visit went ahead was in the hands of the ship's captain.
