The first public fundraiser for Wanaka's new $11.8million swimming pool will be held tomorrow.

Ranfurly opera singer David McAtamney will perform to a crowd of about 350 at the Lake Wanaka Centre.

Funds raised from the concert will be the first "non-forecast'' donation for the project.

In December the Otago Community Trust announced a grant of $500,000 towards construction, and in October the Central Lakes Trust pledged $1million.

"Indicative'' annual rates increase figures released by the Queenstown Lakes District Council assumed $2.77million of the capital cost and operating deficit of the pool would be covered by fundraising and land sales.

Queenstown Lakes deputy mayor Lyal Cocks, who is in charge of fundraising for the project, told the Otago Daily Times yesterday a fundraising team was still working on a prospectus to show to potential pool sponsors.

At a QLDC meeting in May Mr Cocks said he was working on a detailed fundraising plan.

He said yesterday the prospectus would be ready "soon''.

A fundraising group had been formed but was "nothing too formal at this stage''.

Both the Wanaka Lions and Rotary clubs were involved.

Wanaka Community Board member Ross McRobie said he was disappointed the prospectus had not been completed.

"It seems to have taken a long time, but those things do take a bit of time.''

Mr McRobie said he "stood by'' his view the job of fundraising for the pool should be given to professional fundraisers.

"It's not being disrespectful to Lyal, but if we had a person dedicated to it it would get the activity that it is due.''

Mr McAtamney said he decided to give all funds from tomorrow's concert to the new pool because it would benefit the whole community.

"Lets have all the bells and whistles for the pool.

"Because Wanaka is Wanaka and it is sadly lacking in a lot of those sort of amenities.''

Mr Cocks said no other fundraising events were planned at this stage.
