Tourist charged over alleged hit-and-run

Police have charged an elderly American tourist over an alleged hit-and-run incident in Queenstown yesterday.

The 77-year-old man's silver Volvo estate car allegedly hit a bike, being ridden by a Spanish man with a three-year-old local boy as a passenger.

They were treated for minor cuts and bruises at the scene, in Malaghans Road near Arrowtown, at 3.30pm. The American has been charged with failing to stop to ascertain injury and careless driving.

Senior Sergeant Paula Enoka said: "His explanation to police was he was going to get his cell phone and friends. He said he was going for help."

Snr Sgt Enoka said investigations at the scene were consistent with the tourist's claim he was driving within the speed limit, at about 80kmh. He was breath tested for alcohol and found to be under the 250mcg limit.
