Remand on bail after alleged assault

A Queenstown man who allegedly assaulted a police officer in Queenstown Mall early yesterday has been named.

Laurence Brundell (23), of Arthurs Point, is charged with assaulting a constable, resisting arrest and disorderly behaviour.

He appeared before a registrar in the Queenstown District Court this morning, and was remanded on bail until March 7.

Sergeant Keith Newell, of Queenstown, said Burndell was intoxicated and repeatedly refused to leave a bar when asked to do so by staff about 12.40am.

When police went to arrest him, he allegedly pushed the constable before punching him on the nose.

Security doormen helped police restrain the man.

The constable suffered "scrapes and bruises'' in the scuffle, Sgt Newell said.
