Hundreds of new homes in Wakatipu

Up to 2164 new homes are on the way for the Wakatipu.

At this afternoon's full Queenstown Lakes District Council meeting, councillors unanimously agreed to adopt the independent commissioner's recommendation on Plan Change 44 - Hanley Downs.

The Otago Daily Times reported on Monday the commissioners had recommended more than 3800 new homes near Jacks Point be developed under the plan change.

However, acting district plan manager Blair Devlin told councillors that figure was the "gross" amount.

Taking into account land required for roads and reserves, the rezoning would allow for between 1279 and 2164 new homes.

Mr Devlin said the commissioners had ruled out the proposed education and innovation campus - included through a submission by the Hanley Downs entities - because they felt there hadn't been enough assessment and analysis.

The recommendation, to adopt the decision and notify it, was moved by Cr Mel Gazzard and seconded by Calum MacLeod.
