Safe calls on public to boycott rodeo

The public is being called on to boycott the Wanaka Rodeo this weekend.

Campaigns and communications officer for animal advocacy organisation Save Animals From Exploitation (Safe) Abi Izzard claims anti-rodeo sentiment is "on the rise'' and yesterday she called on the public not to attend the Saturday evening event.

Ms Izzard said a horse died at the Te Anau Rodeo, on December 30, and a bull died at the Richmond Rodeo on January 23.

Safe campaign manager Mandy Carter told the Otago Daily Times the organisation would not be protesting at the rodeo but she did not rule out the possibility other groups and individuals would.

"There's been lots of protests this rodeo season, all around the country.

"It just seems like there has been a turning point in public opinion.''

About 50 people protested outside the National Rodeo Final in Outram on Saturday.

A 48,000-signature petition calling for a ban on rodeos is due to be presented to Parliament next week.

Ms Izzard said there was "no excuse'' for rodeos continuing to get support.

"Towns and cities across New Zealand have so much to offer both locals and tourists, providing wholesome family fun without causing harm to animals.

"We are encouraging the residents of Wanaka to find alternative forms of entertainment that do not involve innocent animals being harmed.''

Rodeo club president Lyal Cocks had no comment to make yesterday on the call for a boycott.
