The Wanaka Golf Club is seeking support for the building of an underpass beneath Ballantyne Rd connecting the two parts of its course.

Manager Kim Badger told the Otago Daily Times yesterday the club was concerned about the safety of members crossing the road with trundlers.

"That road is just getting busier and busier.

"It is a danger because of the rise. Cars just come flying over that,'' Ms Badger said.

"They come at speed.''

She said the club had been unsuccessful in persuading the Queenstown Lakes District Council to install some sort of pedestrian crossing.

"They don't think it would work.

"Personally, I think they haven't really looked at it enough. I just think the council does not want to pay anything.''

Ms Badger said crossing the road was a health and safety issue for the club's 970 members, and the club had decided to investigate an underpass, expected to cost more than $250,000.

It would take years for the club to raise the money itself, and while, as a registered charity, it could apply for funding from charitable trusts, it needed official backing, she said.

The matter was raised at Wednesday's meeting of the Wanaka Community Board by chairwoman Rachel Brown.

Ms Brown said a transport strategy was needed for pedestrians and cyclists travelling between the centre of Wanaka and the new Three Parks subdivision, and the suggested underpass might be considered as part of that.

Ms Badger believed an underpass would be positive for both the club and the community, and she was keen to have the underpass considered for inclusion in the strategy.

"We are going to keep pushing for it.''
