Mother's Day event raising heart awareness

A Mother's Day fun run/walk in Queenstown next month will help raise money and awareness for the Heart Foundation's Go Red for Women campaign and help one Queenstown primary school.

The 5km event is part of a national initiative run by Jennian Homes aimed at improving the heart health of New Zealand women.

Heart Foundation medical director Gerry Devlin said heart disease was often considered a ‘‘male problem'' but it was the No 1 killer of women in New Zealand and internationally.

‘‘In fact, Kiwi women are four times more likely to die of heart disease than breast cancer, a largely unknown fact.''

Jennian Homes will be giving $20,000 raised from the Mother's Day events held throughout the country on May 8 to support the campaign.

Registrations cost $20 per person, or $15 for anyone over the age of 65, $15 per person for a ‘‘mother and child combo'' or $14 per person for a group of 10 or more.

All entrants will receive an official T-shirt featuring a design by New Zealand artist Dick Frizzell and, at registration, can nominate a local primary school.

After registrations close, the school with the most nominations would receive $2500 in Rebel Sport vouchers for sporting equipment.

• To register: www.jennian.co.nz/mothersday before May 3.
