Details on Lake Hayes retirement village

More details have emerged about a $250million retirement village proposal in Queenstown.

Yesterday, the Queenstown Lakes District Council said it had received an expression of interest from Sanderson Group for its planned village near Lake Hayes to be considered a special housing area.

The company's document, lodged with the council this week, stated its Queenstown proposal would have 227 villas, 72 serviced apartments and a 72-bed care facility, with rest-home, hospital and dementia care.

Staff accommodation is planned and there is space set aside for residential houses.

Prices would start at $575,000.

Sanderson Group chairman Fraser Sanderson described interest in a recent public open day as a "frenzy''.

Queenstown had a "serious crisis'' in elderly accommodation, he said.

"The proposal will free up hundreds of homes for the local housing market,'' the expression of interest said.

Feedback closes on May 20.
