Fatal chopper crash near Lindis Pass

One person has been killed in a helicopter crash just east of Lindis Pass this afternoon.

A St John spokesman confirmed one person was killed in the crash, and said a man was being flown to Dunedin with serious abdominal injuries.

It is understood two people were on board the helicopter, which crashed about midday.

Steve Rendle, of the New Zealand Rescue Co-ordination Centre, said the Otago Rescue chopper was on the scene and another chopper was on the way.

"The Aspiring rescue helicopter from Wanaka is en route with an alpine rescue team on board if it is needed,'' he said.

Other emergency services are also on the way to the scene.

An RCC spokesman confirmed the helicopter was a Robinson R22 but could not say whether it was commercial or private.
