A team of Downer workmen put the finishing touches to a new set of traffic lights at the intersection of Ballarat and Stanley Sts in Queenstown, which started operating last night.

NZTA transport planning manager Tony Sizemore said the lights would adjust automatically with changing traffic volumes.

"Pedestrian safety and managing congestion at peak times, given the continuing growth of the district, is the primary reason for the switch to traffic signals from roundabouts.

"Signals can also be remotely managed to cope with changing traffic patterns in and around Queenstown on a daily and seasonal basis. New signage will be added to ensure drivers are aware of the changes.''

The crew tried to minimise disruption when working around the busy road and pedestrian crossing, Mr Sizemore said.

This is the first of two new sets of lights,

the second to be installed at the intersection of Shotover and Stanley Sts.

The second set should be completed around mid-June.
