Expansion land taken off market

A piece of land pivotal to the expansion of Wanaka Airport has been taken off the market.

The 43 hectares, known as Windermere Farm and Aviation Park, at the western end of the airport, was advertised for sale with a deadline of April 28.

However, Colliers managing director commercial sales and leasing Alastair Wood this week told the Otago Daily Times several offers had been made but none were acceptable to the vendor.

The property had been advertised as having been put up for sale by Dorothy Pittaway on behalf of the Pittaway Family Trust.

In 2011, resource consent was granted by the Queenstown Lakes District Council to develop 11 aircraft hangars on the property, ranging in size from 500sq m to 636sq m.

The consent had expired, but the vendor now intended to reapply for consent to use the land for hangars, Mr Wood said.

A report to the council last month by Auckland aviation consultant Astral recommended the council buy the Windermere property to expand the amount of commercial land available at the airport.

Astral's report noted the airport had 12 "firm requests'' for new hangars accommodating 23 aircraft and covering 22,800sq m.

One request was from Nasa, for a building of at least 2500sq m to use for its high-pressure balloon-launching facility.
