Weapons, assault charge laid after men stopped

Two Christchurch men were caught allegedly with a baseball bat with a machete taped to the end when stopped by police in Cromwell. Peter Laurence Burridge (21) and Marcus Raymond Boyd (29) also allegedly had two imitation Glock pistols.

Officers stopped Boyd's van on State Highway 6, Cromwell, on Wednesday afternoon, following allegations Burridge had committed an aggravated assault after attempting to shoplift some cologne from a Queenstown pharmacy.

They are jointly charged with possession of an offensive weapon (the bat) and also ‘‘carrying'' the imitation pistols without lawful or sufficient purpose.

Burridge also faced one charge of aggravated assault and one charge of shoplifting, of a $107 bottle of Bulgari, from Five Mile Pharmacy, Frankton. They appeared before a justice of the peace in the Queenstown District Court yesterday.

Both were remanded without plea in custody, Boyd by consent and Burridge after his bail application was denied.

Boyd is due to appear in the Christchurch District Court on Monday, while Burridge is due back in the Queenstown court on May 30.
