Jetstar on lookout for opportunities

Jetstar is taking a wait-and-see approach before extending its Queenstown services further.

But the Qantas cut-price subsidiary's head of New Zealand, Grant Kerr, says he expects the resort's tourism boom to keep rolling for the foreseeable future.

The airline expected further opportunities for growth in the coming years.

"If you look back over a number of years now, any extra capacity that's been put into Queenstown has been soaked up and the number of visitors has increased.''

Mr Kerr arrived in the resort on Wednesday in preparation for this evening's first international after-dark flight to Queenstown Airport.

Jetstar flight JQ219 is scheduled to arrive from Melbourne at 7.20pm, coinciding with the opening of the Queenstown Winter Festival.

The return flight will depart at 8.20pm.

Mr Kerr said tonight's flight was more than 90% full and forward bookings for the new route's first week already exceeded 80%.

Jetstar had been operating domestic flights to Queenstown for seven years and international flights to the resort for the past six, and the new service was another opportunity to tap into the resort's rapid visitor growth, he said.

He did not rule out the prospect of taking on arch-rival Air New Zealand in operating after-dark flights between Auckland and Queenstown.

"We're always monitoring and seeing what the opportunities are to grow.''

A new American Airlines service from Los Angeles to Auckland meant more American visitors would travel to Queenstown on Jetstar.
