Busy weekend for police

Queenstown police were kept busy at the weekend with six alleged assaults, an offensive behaviour incident and a driver attempting to evade police.

A police spokesman told the Otago Daily Times it had to abandon the pursuit of a "fleeing driver'' due to "excessive speed''.

The incident happened shortly after 10pm on Friday when the car's occupant attempted to avoid a checkpoint on Gorge Rd.

On Saturday, just before 11pm, a 21-year-old Winton man was arrested and charged with common assault after an altercation in Queenstown Mall.

It is understood the victim received a "single punch'' during the skirmish.

A number of fights were also reported yesterday morning, the first at 12.50am when police received a report of an alleged assault at a nightclub in Queenstown Mall.

It is understood someone received a "punch to the head'' while breaking up a fight and was taken to hospital.

No-one was arrested but police confirmed inquiries were ongoing.

At 1am another assault was reported, this time on Camp St.

A 38-year-old Queenstown man was "pushed from behind by an unknown offender and punched in the face''.

Police urged anyone who witnessed the incident to come forward.

They were also on the scene at Queenstown Mall about the same time when a 19-year-old from Invercargill was arrested and

allegedly found to be in possession of a knife and of an illegal drug. He faces charges of common assault, possession of a knife and possession of a class C drug, namely cannabis.

He is due to appear in court today.

At 2.15am a fight broke out beside a taxi rank on Camp St involving a group of men from Timaru.

It is understood the incident started when one man attempted to get into a taxi.

One man has been arrested and faces a charge of disorderly behaviour likely to cause violence.

Police are asking anyone who witnessed the taxi rank incident to come forward.

At 3.50am an 18-year-old man from Temuka was arrested and charged with disorderly behaviour likely to cause violence and was given a pre-charge warning as a result of an altercation on Camp St.

At 7am yesterday, two men from Invercargill received a formal warning from police for offensive behaviour.

Yesterday morning, police also picked up a 50-year-old Queenstown man on Frankton Rd at 12.05am for allegedly drink-driving.

That man is expected to appear in court next month.
