The facility, that once finished will have a $30million price tag, was officially opened on Thursday.
However, the Queenstown Lakes District Council invited sports teams, clubs and the public for the first "have a go'' opportunity on Saturday.
Team leader Angie Calder said there had been "a steady stream of people'' keen to view the indoor facilities.
The floor space could be adapted to provide courts for basketball, netball, tennis, futsal and badminton.
"The secret is lots of lines on the courts - with individual sports represented by different colours,'' she said.
"People really loved it and there was a lot of interest in the future swimming pool [and] the planned outdoor area.
"I think many people felt the sports centre had been a long time coming and it was nice to see it finally built and operating.''
Although numbers visiting over the weekend had not been kept, senior citizens made up the bulk of people touring the centre, Mrs Calder said.
