11 hotel lift passengers stuck between floors

Eleven people were rescued by firefighters after getting stuck in a Queenstown hotel lift yesterday afternoon.

The Volunteer Fire Brigade was called to Rydges Lakeland Resort, on Lake Esplanade, shortly before 4pm.

Volunteer fireman Paul Halsted, who was driving one of the fire engines, said the people were trapped in the lift for about 30 minutes.

The lift was stuck between the ground floor and level one.

"The lift broke down with 11 people on board. We gained access using a small ladder and we managed to open the doors and get them out.''

Two fire engines and 11 crew attended the incident and Mr Halsted said they were able to talk to those trapped while the recovery was taking place.

He said one man "didn't seem to be feeling too well'' when he got out.

St John Central Lakes territory manager Kelvin Perriman confirmed the man was treated at the scene for a "medical related condition''.

Management from Rydges declined to speak to the Otago Daily Times when contacted last night.
