Summerdaze 2009-10, the Queenstown Lakes District Council's summer festival, is promising another action-packed programme.

QLDC arts and events facilitator Jan Maxwell said this year's festival would have something for all ages and interests, with plenty of free community events.

The ever-popular tea dances, the AWS Legal Teddy Bears' Picnic and New Year's Eve fireworks displays in Queenstown and Wanaka were all favourites, Mrs Maxwell said.

"New Year's Eve is going to be huge.

"The organisers are guaranteeing a great show, with a fantastic line-up of bands signed for both Queenstown and Wanaka, and a cracking fireworks display to top the night off," Mrs Maxwell said.

A new event at this year's festival involves local actors bringing Shakespeare's works to life in an outdoor setting.

• Queenstown Ventures has applied for resource consent to hold "Summer Sessions" at St Omer Park and the Steamer Wharf throughout summer until April on an annual basis.

The application said the Summer Sessions would "promote vibrancy and culture in the area" and would also assist and encourage local musicians performing for the public in a "low-key, relaxed environment".

The Summer Sessions would launch with the Summerdaze festival and would see amplified acoustic musical played "at a background level" from 5pm to 10pm Thursday to Saturday, with entertainment from noon to 10pm on Sundays and public holidays.
