Wakatipu artists will create new works before the eyes of
the public when a Queenstown gallery doubles as a working
studio this month.
Artists Simon Morrison-Deaker, Rachael Errington, Jeri Elliot
and Emma Butler will work in pairs at the Artbay Gallery, on
Beach St, from this week until the end of March.
Gallery director Pauline Bianchi said the inspiration behind
the idea was to invite visitors into the world of the artist
so they could watch creations "reveal themselves" over a
period of time.
"The artists warmly welcome you to call in and watch them
paint. They invite questions about their respective works and
would be delighted to discuss personal commission
requirements."
Mr Morrison-Deaker said he planned to create "more realistic
material than usual", while developing his heraldry themes
and using colonial and native flora and fauna references.
Ms Butler said she would work on her series based on a
character named Ruby and her dog, Scarlett.
"We get asked anything [by the public]. They're quite
intrigued by Ruby. Who she is, how I came up with the
character, and the technique."
Ms Errington said she would add to her tree series, and would
branch out into oil painting still-life items of Kiwiana.
Ms Elliott said she would be creating larger versions of her
"naive" landscapes, similar in style to her winning entry for
the 2011 Otago telephone book cover competition.
All artworks will be for sale through Artbay Gallery.
