To mark World Environment Day, Queen's High School carried out a whole school waste audit, writes school principal Julie Anderson.
This means we took every single bit if rubbish that was made in the school over the period of one day and sorted and weighed it to find out what exactly our rubbish was about. It was a lot and it was disgusting, but we did find many interesting things.
We counted 1280 pieces of packaging and nearly 300 pieces of glad wrap.
In one day at Queen's we made a total of 80kg of rubbish.
If we had school every day for a year we'd make 28 tonnes of rubbish, which is equivalent to 53kg for each person in the school.
To put that in perspective that's like every person in the school throwing out one Chrissy every year, except a much greater volume because Chrissy's quite compact.
Of that 80kg we think 70kg could be recycled.
