Rugby supporters always seem to get a bad reputation, writes Maya Tueri of Logan Park High School.

Why do you ask? Simple; rioting, fighting, bad sportsmanship, drunkenness and negative, unhelpful behaviour.

Four of the five stereotypes were exhibited at Eden Park recently.

Fans attending the rugby league game international at the weekend booed during the Australian anthem, threw bottles into the air during the Mexican wave, fought and the drunken behaviour spilled out into the streets after the match.

This has caused major ruptures in confidence for the success of the Rugby World Cup that will be held next year.

Bronwyn Wallace, high school student says, "I think that an environment that contains thousands of men, a sport they all love and alcohol, things like this are bound to happen. It's almost part of the rugby culture, worldwide."

This is true.

In sport there will always be winners, and losers, and the loser are not always accepting of the score.

Reports from Eden Park said that the security was slim, so some major changes need to be made. "I think they should be concerned for the World Cup but not just because of this one game.

There are hooligans everywhere," Bronwyn jokes.

But there is truth in jest, and as a country we need to step up to the plate.

Do we really want ‘World Cup Riots!' on the front of newspapers worldwide?

Eden Park Trust Board chief executive David Kennedy told Morning Report that the behaviour of the fans was unacceptable and that they would look into restricting the time alcohol is sold for within the park, and restricting entry to those intoxicated.
