Participants in the Otago primary school sports at the
Caledonian Ground yesterday.
The Columba College 4x50m relay team broke a 39-year-old
record at the annual event. Kate MacBeth, Mia Aoake, Meg
Sycamore and Fiona Schultz broke the girls under-12 record
with their time of 28.13sec. The old record was set by the
Vincent team in 1973. Meg Timu (Mount Aspiring College) broke
the girls under-13 70m hurdles record with a time of
10.94sec.
She is the daughter of former All Black John Timu.
Hamish Mears (Silverstream) broke the boys under-12 discus
record with a throw of 27.73m. There were 600 pupils from all
parts of Otago competing at the annual primary school sports,
which have been held since the 1930s. Athletes qualify for
the championships by competing at zone meetings in Dunedin
and country districts in Otago.
