The St Hilda's tennis team won the Otago secondary schools
tournament, and will represent our region at the South Island
tournament. The touch team also won the Otago tournament and
will compete at the South Island tournament this month.
The Otago-Southland secondary schools water ski championships
were held recently. Bailey Sutherland and Philippa Dingle
placed first and second respectively in the 16 and under
champion section, and Georgia Power and Anna Power placed
first and second respectively in the 16 and under novice
section.
The touch team competed in the national tournament in
Hamilton, finishing ninth.
The First XI cricket team competed in the NZCT tournament in
Palmerston North, finishing third.
It beat St Kentigern's, New Plymouth Girls and Palmerston
North Girls.
Caitlin Blakely was both player and bowler of the tournament.
A highlight of the national secondary schools athletics was
the gold medal won by Erin O'Brien in the open 2000m walk.
Taieri College
Harrison McNally placed second in the under-15 shot put and
discus at the Otago championships. Bradley Tarleton placed
third in the under-16 hammer at the New Zealand schools
athletics, as well as winning the same event at the
Canterbury championships.
Several long-standing Taieri College athletics records have
been broken. Hamish Mears (shot put), Trey Russell (1500m),
Hamish Mears (discus), Taylor Cramond (75m), Matt Butcher
(75m), Hannah Ashton (high jump) and Ethan George (javelin)
were some of the stand-outs.
At the Otago-Southland triathlon and multisport in Cromwell,
the Taieri College team performed with distinction. Both the
senior boys and junior mixed teams finished second.
Taieri's cricket teams competed in both the Gillette Cup and
NZCT tournaments. A highlight was Jarrod Casey's 107 not out
against Milton.
Logan Park
Logan Park High School had double success at the New Zealand
secondary schools lawn bowls championships. Callum Horwell
and Jacobi Kahu-Morris retained their boys pairs title.
Horwell and Kohu-Morris won their final 9-8 against Stefan
McCartain and Nathan Alridge, of Tauranga Boys'. They became
the first boys pair to successfully defend the national
title. The girls pair of Tayla Hohaia and Sarah Wilson won
the girls plate final, against Jessica Hall and Latisha Tuia,
of Aotea College, 15-2.
Tayla Hohaia placed second in the Otago under-19 Kittyhawk
tournament on Waitangi Day. She will now compete in the
national competition in Auckland at Easter.
Roxburgh Area School
Roxburgh Area pupils have been busy with the school
triathlon, swimming sports and athletic sports.
These events are combined with Maniototo Area School and
Lawrence Area School.
Five Roxburgh teams attended the Otago-Southland triathlon
and multisport held in Cromwell. The junior boys team of Jack
Lennon, Jonty McKinnel and Max Duncan placed second. Meghan
Scanlan and Emma Parker have been to New Zealand area school
netball training camp in preparation for the team to play
later in the year. Meghan has also attended the New Zealand
regional talent identification programme in Invercargill.
Kaikorai Valley College
The highlight has been the performance of the school's senior
mixed touch team. At the Otago secondary schools
championships, the team overcame an early loss to win the
final, after an extra time drop-off over arch-rival South
Otago. Year 12 pupils Thomas Johnson and Samantha Lobb will
travel to Tauranga with the Otago under-17 touch teams.
Thomas, the South Island boys under-17 MVP, is also a member
of the Otago under-21 mixed team and is attending the open
nationals.
East Otago High School
East Otago High School's athletics day was held in blustery
conditions. Seven school records were broken. The under-16
girls discus and shot put records were broken by Courtney
Martin, and the under-16 girls 1500m and 3000m records were
broken by Olivia Ollerenshaw. Michael Hunter jumped 1.50m in
the high jump, breaking the under-14 boys record, and senior
pupil Ian Geno broke the shot put and open hammer throw
records.
The school had four teams compete in the Otago-Southland
triathlon and multisport in Cromwell. The junior boys team of
Ammon Hunter (swimming), Cameron Bartrum (biking) and James
Bungard (running) placed third.
Paige Church has been selected for the South Island Maori
rugby team to play in Palmerston North.
Two year 10 pupils, Libby Sheppard and Sheamus Neilson,
competed in the Special Olympics athletics ribbon day at the
Caledonian Ground. Sheamus placed fifth in the 100m, sixth in
shot put and seventh in long jump, and Libby placed fifth in
the 100m.
Dunstan High School
Dunstan High School had success at the national secondary
schools athletics championships. Rhian Ward's time in the
senior boys 800m gained him selection in the New Zealand
Youth Olympic team that competed in Sydney in January. Rhian
placed fifth at this event in 1min 56sec.
Adriana Mawhinney won gold in the high jump at the Colgate
Games in January.
Daniel Arnott, Sam McCulloch, Kensa Randle and Kate Pascoe
attended the Australian secondary school and national kayak
slalom championships in January, as part of a New Zealand
under-18 development squad. The four returned with 16 medals
between them. Deahna Shearer has been selected in the New
Zealand women's under-18 K1 team to compete at the junior
world championships in Slovakia. School rowers performed
outstandingly at the South Island club championships. Eirlys
Bond, Ella Galletly, Lucy Geddes and Sydney Cook won the
under-15 quad, Lucy and Sydney won the novice double, and
Eirlys and Ella the silver in the under-15 double. Eirlys,
Sydney, Lucy and Keryn Tubbs, with cox Jack Bruce, also
competed at the New Zealand club championships, placing sixth
in the women's novice event.
Otago Girls' High School
At the national athletics championships in Dunedin, the Otago
Girls' High School junior 4x100m relay team of Kiana Pelasio,
Brigid O'Neill, Alex Lesa and Sydney Evans-Tobata won bronze.
In February, Brigid joined Anna Cross, Jasmin Ng and Alana
Close were second in the international track meet relay in
Christchurch.
Maddy Doran (15) has made the New Zealand under-17 badminton
team to compete in Melbourne in March and April.
Alice Moran (14) had success at the Otago swimming
championships, winning the 200m backstroke and placing second
in the 100m backstroke.
Claudia Peyroux (16) and Martine Matapo (15) were in the
Otago under-17 touch team that won the South Island
tournament. Kiana Pelasio (14) and Holly Johnstone (15) were
in the Otago under-15 team that also won a title.
Kaori Kitahara (14), Gemma Dingley (14) and Hayley Smith (14)
were members of the Otago under-14 water polo team that
placed fourth at the national championships.
Claudia Flaws (16) and Esmae Knox (15) travelled to New South
Wales with the New Zealand under-18 development basketball
squad. Jessie Clark-Grant (15) joined them as part of the
under-16 squad.
Otago Girls' rowing crews did well atthe Canterbury secondary
schools regatta. Karley Wilden-Palms (15) won gold in the
under-16 single scull, and Karley Wilden-Palms (15) and
Tabitha Seaton (15) won silver in the under-16 double scull.
The under-17 quadruple scull of Georgia de Raad (15),
Michaela King (16), Laura Anderson (16), Ellie Murphy (15)
and cox Daniela Lemow (16) won bronze, as did the under-16
quadruple scull of Karley, Georgia, Ellie, Tabitha and
Daniela.
King's High School
King's played Southland Boys' in an interschool in
Invercargill last week. The overall result was a draw. The
standout performance was from the First XI and, in
particular, bowler Bradley Thomson, who took 10 wickets in
the match. With batsmen Joel Meade and Taylor Cumberland also
making significant contributions, the First XI secured an
innings victory. This win was the first in Southland in more
than 30 years. Felix Page has been selected for the Willows
Youth XI , and Joel Meade for the Governor General's XI.
The King's touch team won the Otago title to qualify for the
South Island tournament in Christchurch. They also beat
Southland Boys' 3 -0.
Josh McCombie competed in the North Island and national
mountain biking championships in Rotorua, placing second in
New Zealand in the under-19 division.
At the national surf life-saving competitions in Tauranga,
Solomon Baldock was fourth in the under-14 beach flags race
and seventh in the sprints. Liam McKillop was fourth in the
under-14 board race.
