Tokomairiro's under-18 rugby team made it into the division 1 final against Taieri College First XV this season. During the final game, Toko led at halftime, 12-8.
The boys played a solid game, spending a lot of time camped in the opposition 22, but were unable to convert this into points. The final score was 25-12 to Taieri College First XV.
This should in no way take away from what has been a very successful season for this young team. Next year looks even more promising with most of the team expected to remain.
Toko A netball team dominated the premier 1 grade at South Otago Netball this season. With an unbeaten record
it placed top in the premier 1 grade. Toko B netball has also done well this season, coming second in the Reserve A grade.
This team shows great potential. Monique Perkins made the under-13 Otago Collier hockey team.
Monique was in the development squad last year and it is great she has made the step up to top representative honours.
Rugby representatives Sam Walker and Justin Perkins have been selected for the Otago under-65kg rugby team.
Commitment at Cromwell
The first event of the term was the Cromwell College cross-country.
There was great participation across all year groups and excellent examples of commitment, competitiveness and encouragement throughout.
This event was used for selecting 16 year 7-8 athletes, who competed in the Central Otago cross-country in Arrowtown.
Lana Deaker and Emily White finished in the top 10 of their respective year groups and will now compete in the Otago Primary Schools cross-country championships.
Ethan Hayes was awarded the Golden Man Trophy for his efforts with a 20-gauge pump-action at the recent clay-target shooting competition in Twizel.
Cromwell College is now aiming to form a smallbore rifle club.
The Cromwell hockey team which comprises Cromwell College pupils finished the season in style by defeating the Dunstan Commanders in the Central Otago senior B final, 6-2.
This season Joe and Ethan Pugh were selected in the Southern under-18 hockey team, and Georgia Franklin, Tegan Buchanan, Molly Pimm and Ruby Gibson in the Central Otago under-15 team.
Mount Aspiring round-up
Mount Aspiring College was proudly represented by its year 10 A team in the finals of the Netball Upper Clutha competition. The team played until the very last whistle but unfortunately was just beaten by McGregors Pioneer.
Janus Staufenberg travelled to Taupo to compete in the NZSS duathlon championships. He had a superb race and won the New Zealand under-14 boys' title.
Blue Mountain College
The Blue Mountain College Year 9-10 netball team attended the South Island junior netball tournament in Christchurch on July 15-17, competing against 13 teams in the combined year 9-10 section.
It defeated Garin, Opihi, Menzies College, Ellesmere College, Buller, John Paul HS1 and Hillmorton, scoring a massive 288 goals over these games to 100 goals from the opposition.
The final was a tense affair against Verdon College from Invercargill which had its tall goal shoot as its chief weapon, Verdon winning 52-30.
Blue Mountain College coach Janine Venz was thrilled with her team's performance throughout the tournament.
Former Silver Fern and manager Annette Heffernan agreed they were a great bunch of girls with big hearts, showing excellent teamwork, great decision-making and fantastic ball skills.
During the July school holidays, head boy Gavin Stark was selected to attend the Highlanders under-18 rugby camp in Dunedin, while deputy head boy Garth Devereux attended an intensive training camp in Christchurch.
Gavin is playing for the Otago Country senior representative team while Garth is in the Otago Country under-18 representative team.
Queen's High School update
August has been another busy and successful sporting month for the girls at Queen's High School.
The winter sports season has finished in style with several teams making semis and finals in recent weeks.
The first XI hockey team went out on top after beating Columba College 1-0 in the secondary schools division 2 competition final.
Many of the players are just year 9 and 10, so the future of Queen's hockey is looking bright.
Congratulations also go to the Queen's junior sevens team which played in the final last week.
The team was pipped at the post by a try scored in the final minute of the game, but came off smiling anyway and players are looking forward to next season already.
Further pupils to make representative teams over the past month include Preeti Aryal (Otago secondary schoolgirls rugby team), Victoria de Filippi (Otago under-17 football team), Grace McIntyre (Otago under-17 badminton squad), and Caitlin McKinlay, Ella Cameron (rhythmic gymnastics) and Emily White (aerobics), who have been selected to represent Otago at the New Zealand gymnastics championships in Napier in October.
Year 9 pupil Te Hohi Valentine recently attended the New Zealand national tae kwon do Championships in Porirua, Wellington.
Te Hohi won gold medals in both the over 50kg fighting division, and in the green belt patterns competition.
Patterns is a pre-determined set of moves against an imaginary enemy.
Te Hohi has been doing tae kwon do for just two years but has already been to two national competitions.
Columba Winter round-up
Columba has a strong representation in the under-15 age hockey teams. A-team members include Isabelle Becconsall-Ryan, Laura Becker, Mackenzie Cassie, Tahlia Green, Jade MacMillan and Emma Stackhouse.
The B team has Grace Brosnahan, Grace Heather and Toni Mulholland.
Recently St Margaret's hosted the annual winter exchange in Christchurch. Congratulations to the A badminton team of Amy Logie (captain), Rieligh Fields, Maddy Foster and Natalie Fong who were undefeated, beating St Margaret's, Craighead and St Hilda's.
Debating was a three-way tie for first place with Columba, St Margaret's and St Hilda's.
In netball, Columba was second to St Margaret's and in hockey, Columba finished third-equal with St Margaret's dominating, going through unbeaten.
